Building a treated-wood fence

Putting up a fence around your garden may be a matter of necessity or a matter of landscape improvement. Whatever your reason, you'll want to do the job in style. And you'll want to make sure your new fence fits well into your outdoor environment.

Versatile, durable and easy to maintain, treated-wood fences are the current rage. If you're handy with a saw and hammer, you could save a lot in labour costs. Before you go out and buy materials and start working, make sure your plan is in full compliance with building codes and municipal by-laws.

Attach the lattice
Attach to the upper part of the fence, vertically on the posts, horizontally to the upper horizontal board, pre-cut lattice mouldings which you will screw through the groove.

Attach the boards
Attach the 1 in. by 6 in. vertical boards, leaving a 1 1/2 in. space between them (spacing can be less if desired). Use the narrow edge of a 2 in. by 4 in. beam (which in fact measures 1 1/2 in. by 3 1/2 in.) as spacer. Attach each vertical board to the top and bottom horizontal beams by means of two diagonally positioned screws.

Cut the trellis
Cut the trellis sheet according to the pattern provided in your plan and insert the sections in the trellis moulding grooves.

Cut the border
Out of a 2 in. by 8 in. ft. board, cut the upper border in the shape provided for in the plan and use a router to cut a ½ in.-deep groove in the lower part of the board in a width sufficient to receive the trellis. The groove must be in the exactly centre of the board (thickness).

Install the border
Place the border over the trellis in such a way as to allow the trellis to fit into the groove, and nail it to the posts at a 45° angle (toe nailed).

Install the post cap
Install a decorative post cap on each post.
